Dentistry

At Eagle Hill, we have a dedicated dental suite to perform our procedures safely and effectively. This includes a dental X-ray machine, an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar, a patient warming unit used to prevent the onset of hypothermia, vital sign monitoring equipment to ensure patient safety and IV fluid pumps to ensure hydration

Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions seen by veterinarians. Over 80% of dogs and 50% of cats over the age of three have active dental disease. Few dogs and cats show obvious signs of dental disease, so it’s up to the family and veterinarian to uncover this hidden and often painful condition.

For proper dental care your pet will be placed under general anesthesia. Once your pet is under general anesthesia, your veterinarian and veterinary assistants will thoroughly examine the mouth, noting abnormalities. After examination, tooth scaling will be performed, using both hand and ultrasonic scalers to remove tartar above and below the gum line. After scaling, the teeth are polished to remove microscopic scratches and decrease the rate of subsequent plaque build-up. When periodontal disease is advanced, it may not be possible to save the badly affected teeth, which may need to be extracted.
